Malayalam is a huge game that revolves around a man who's been stranded on a desert island, but not the kind you've seen in cartoons. This isn't a little sand hill with a palm tree, it's vast landmass that could easily take you several days to fully explore. Your mission is to survive as long as you can, and see if you can solve the mysteries of the island in the form of various quests and tasks.
Surviving long enough to complete any or all of the tasks is the real meat of the game, as death hides around every corner in the form of drowning, burning, starving and being poisoned by everything that moves and some things that don't. I'm sure there are also plenty of ways to die that I haven't experienced yet.
As you might expect, your first order of business if to find a steady source of food and water. Food comes in the form of wild fruits and local animals, but be careful, I died of toxic mushrooms during my first time playing. My character was getting hungry, and I thought I'd found a great renewable source of food for him! But then.... death came swiftly. Other sources of food include fishing and hunting, and the animals you catch can be cooked over campfires that you make for yourself.
Along the way, you'll also find several quests in the form of glowing papers laying around on the ground. These can help point you in certain directions so you don't feel quite so lost all the time. Like other games with quests, your quest obligations can quickly overwhelm you, so try to take them one at a time! Quests and missions start off pretty simple, telling you to go from point A to point B, but things get complicated fast.
Malayalam is one of those games where keeping your browser window open while playing is probably a good idea. If this were a professional release, you'd be hitting Gamefaqs every ten minutes or so. Fortunately this game comes with a very expansive and detailed support base including dedicated forums and an in-depth manual. There is even a helpful walk through on youtube! So even though this game can seem very overwhelming at first, the author has made several tools available to help get you started and keep you playing!
Graphics and sounds are very fitting, although graphics might be the weakest aspect of the game. While the complexity of the game itself is vast, the graphics are very simple in nature, which some people might not see as a bad thing. Sprites and items are small and simple, while still being colorful and easy to identify. Graphics in a game like this usually don't need to be overly detailed, as the gameplay is the most important aspect of any exploration/survival game. Music and sound effects add a huge amount of atmosphere to the game. The music is always kept in the background, adding to the feel of the game without overpowering it. Sound effects like waves and birds help keep you grounded in the reality that you are all alone on a really big island.
Gameplay is very solid, and you'll get the hang of it pretty fast. You guide your character with the mouse and right click to make him stop and start again. You can also use the mouse to drag items to and from the inventory bar. It's a simple system that's well done and simple to use. Once again however, you'll probably need some guidance on how to properly combine and use these items. While the possibilities in Malayalam are almost endless, you probably won't figure out most of the "correct" possibilities on your own, at least not without a boatload of trial and error first.
Overall, this is a very well made game that's worth a download for just about anyone with a few hours to kill. As with most games, Malayalam had a few bugs at launch, including misbehaving water bottles, but those are being addressed for future downloads. Malayalam is a rich and detailed world that can provide days of gameplay as long as you're patient and keep the forums close by. New players might get quickly overwhelmed by the number of quests that point in different directions and the huge amount of terrain to cover, so I strongly recommend reading the manual and playing the tutorial before starting.
